Do You Need to Read Music to Learn Guitar?

Music stand for beginner guitarists

Mark Mannering Barton - Pick to Play Guitar

One of the questions I'm asked most by complete beginners is:

"Do I need to learn to read music before I can play the guitar?"

The simple answer is...

No.

In fact, many successful guitarists have never become fluent music readers, and millions of people learn to play purely through chords, chord diagrams, tablature (tabs) and by listening.

So, if reading music is the one thing putting you off learning the guitar, don't let it.

Why Most Beginners Don't Start with Music Notation

Learning guitar already involves plenty of new skills.

You're teaching your fingers where to go, building strength, developing coordination and learning how to change chords smoothly.

Adding traditional music notation at the very beginning can sometimes make things feel more complicated than they need to be.

Most beginner guitar lessons focus on helping you play songs as soon as possible. That early sense of achievement keeps learning enjoyable and helps build confidence.

So, What Do Beginners Learn Instead?

Most new guitarists start with three simple tools:

Chord Diagrams

These show exactly where to place your fingers on the fretboard.

No need to read notes—just follow the diagram.

Guitar Tabs

Tabs (short for tablature) are incredibly popular.

Instead of showing musical notes, they use six horizontal lines to represent the guitar strings, with numbers telling you which fret to play.

Many beginners find tabs much easier to understand than traditional sheet music.

Listening

Learning to recognise chord changes, rhythms and melodies by ear is an important skill that develops naturally over time.

It's also one of the most enjoyable parts of learning an instrument.

Is Reading Music Ever Useful?

Absolutely….If you want to:

  • Study classical guitar

  • Join certain orchestras or ensembles

  • Take graded examinations

  • Work as a professional session musician

...then reading traditional notation becomes much more important.

For many people, though, it's something that can be learned later if and when it's needed.

My Approach to Teaching

When teaching adults, my priority is helping you enjoy playing from the very first lesson.

We'll learn songs you recognise, build good technique and develop confidence at a pace that feels comfortable.

If reading music becomes something you'd like to explore later, we can absolutely do that.

But it isn't a requirement for becoming a good guitarist.

Don't Let It Stop You

I've met countless people who have wanted to learn guitar for years but kept putting it off because they thought they needed a musical background first.

You don't.

All you really need is:

  • A guitar

  • A little patience

  • Regular practice

  • A willingness to have a go

Everything else can be learned one step at a time.

So, if you've been waiting until you "know enough music" before starting, consider this your sign to begin today.

You might surprise yourself with just how quickly you can play your first song.
