Why I Teach Guitar Differently
Mark Mannering Barton - Pick to Play Guitar
Most adult beginners don’t want endless scales or exams.
They just want to enjoy playing.
And in my experience, that’s where many people get stuck — not because they can’t learn, but because the process feels disconnected from what they actually want to do.
Start With Real Songs
In my lessons, we focus on real songs first.
That means from the very beginning, you’re working towards something recognisable and enjoyable — not just exercises for the sake of it.
This builds confidence quickly and gives you a reason to keep picking up the guitar.
Theory When It’s Useful
Theory and technique absolutely have their place.
But for most adult beginners, introducing too much too soon can feel overwhelming.
Instead, we bring these elements in gradually — when they support what you’re already playing.
That way, they make sense and feel relevant.
Progress Without Pressure
Learning guitar shouldn’t feel like school.
It should feel like something you look forward to.
The focus is always on:
• Steady, realistic progress
• Enjoyment over perfection
• Building confidence over time
A Practical, Adult-Focused Approach
I specialise in working with adult beginners and late starters.
People who want a clear, supportive way into playing — without pressure, and without feeling like they’re starting from scratch in a classroom environment.
